Momiform MAKEover Series and a Giveaway!

File Sep 21, 4 56 08 PM

I am so excited to be a part of the Momiform MAKEover series happening over at Baste + Gather! Lauren has pulled together 30+ moms who have been sewing up a storm to make over our daily uniforms. Similar to Lauren, I had my third baby 7 months ago and I definitely had a long period of time where I was wearing nothing but my maternity Hudson pants, my post-partum Linden sweatshirts, and some ill fitting jeans I bought to see me through as I lost baby weight. By summer I was fitting in more of my handmades, but I really needed some new things for the Fall. Lauren gathered an amazing list of sponsors for this series and I jumped at the chance to sew some new things for myself from some patterns I’d had my eye on for a while.**

Sallie 1

I started out sewing the Sallie Maxi dress from Closet Case Files. When this pattern first came out I sort of wrote it off as something that wouldn’t work for me. I really don’t know if I can pull off a jumpsuit and the pattern as drafted has a low v-neck. My preference is for a higher neckline since so much of my day is spent bending over picking up things the kids have dropped on the floor.

Sallie 3

Thankfully somewhere along the line I realized I could raise the neckline on the kimono sleeve bodice, combine it with the maxi skirt option, and still be able to get in and out of the dress. When I tried it on for the first time during construction I heard angels sing. I love this dress and I feel like a million bucks in it. I love that the skirt isn’t so full that I get tangled up in it when I walk– the side slits are great for being able to move around easily. It is so comfortable and so flattering. Heather Lou works some kind of magic with her patterns where everyone looks amazing in them. I can’t wait to make another one of these.

Sallie 2

My goal for my Momiform MAKEover was to use as many fabrics from my stash as possible. I had 2 yards of this Art Gallery knit in my stash and had to order a little bit more to be able to make this dress. I used Heather’s romper tutorial to make the bodice without a lining as I figured this knit would be too thick for a double layered bodice. It worked perfectly. I have worn this dress weekly since I made it. It’s so easy to throw on and look put together even if I’m totally sleep deprived and rushing out the door for the pre-school drop off.

Morris Blazer 1

The next item I made was the Grainline Studio Morris Blazer. I ordered this ponte knit from the Indiesew shop with the intention of making a Morris Blazer. (Sadly, the fabric is now sold out.) I loved the stripes and I knew it would make a great outfit with my green Greenwood tank and Ginger Jeans.

Morris Blazer 2

I followed the sewalong on the Grainline website as I made the blazer. Since my fabric is really stretchy I made sure to interface the front pieces as well as the facings to keep the front from getting saggy. I found the post on making the facing to be particularly helpful. The rest of the construction is pretty straightforward but it was nice to have a couple of extra pictures for that step.

Morris Blazer 3

This blazer is really comfortable and looks so much better than the pilly fleece jacket that I usually throw on over t-shirts.  I haven’t considered myself a blazer person before, but a knit or stretch woven blazer like Morris is totally non-restrictive and machine washable. (That is a major plus in my book– I never know what is going to end up getting wiped on my clothes throughout the course of the day!)

Morris Blazer 4

Cookie Blouson 1

Because I love rushing to meet a deadline (haha!) I saved my most involved project for last. I have been wanting to make the Waffle Patterns Cookie Blouson jacket for quite a while. I have had this wool/rayon plaid fabric in my stash since last winter waiting to be made into this jacket. I ordered the wine colored ponte knit from the Imagine Gnats shop hoping that the color would be a good match and I could use it for the cuffs and neck/hem bands. It turned out to be a perfect match!

Cookie Blouson 6

I followed the tutorial that Yuki has on her website for fully lining the jacket. I lined the main body with this awesome Lizzy House cat fabric that I also had in my stash. The sleeves are lined with rayon bemberg. I’ve paired this jacket with one of my favorite Linden sweatshirts and my Ginger jeans.

Cookie Blouson 4

This is my first lined jacket and I’m really pleased with how it turned out.  I am going to revisit this jacket in a separate blog post. It was a pretty time consuming project and I think it deserves it’s own post to really get into more of the construction details. It was a fun jacket to sew and I think it will be even more fun to wear. I love the bomber jacket look with the feminine gathering. I’m so glad to finally have a great fall jacket in my handmade wardrobe!

**Before I get to the amazing giveaway details I would like to thank Lauren for letting me be part of this awesome series! I was provided with three free patterns for this series. Thank you to Heather from Closet Case Files for the Sallie Maxi dress pattern! Thank you to Jen from Grainline for the Morris Blazer pattern! Thank you to Andrea from Go To Patterns shop and to Yuki from Waffle Patterns for the Cookie Blouson pattern! I am going to feel great wearing your patterns through this Fall and beyond!

  1. Oh, wow! Great makes, they all look fab! I really must get round to making a Morris myself, seen so many lovely versions. The maxi dress looks fab, bet you could really dress it up for evenings too. Still loving that green on you 🙂

    1. Thanks, Teresa! I think you’d like the Morris a lot! I was pondering maybe making this maxi dress in the green next Spring. I don’t know if I’d end up looking like a giant green bean in it, though. I’ll have to keep kicking that idea around a bit!

    1. Thanks, Gail! It’s been so long since I’ve worn shoes with any heel at all– my feet were killing me after wearing these for the 5 minutes it took to get photos of the jacket. I’ve got to try to get my feet used to these shoes again!
